Bobbi says...
I'm
a contemporary self-taught folk artist, photographer and writer
who likes to try new things and work in a variety of media. Since
I was a young child and on up through adulthood and middle age,
I've experimented with watercolors, pottery, quilting, designing
primitive folk art dolls, oil painting, pastels, handmade paper,
rylics, etc.
Along the way,
I discovered that I could write, so writing and the art work have
always gone hand in hand for me. When it came time to go to college,
I decided that I might as well study something that I loved, so
I choose to get a B.A. in Studio art concentrating in design and
the fiber arts. Out of that came a love for surface design, and
playing around with dyes, texture and colors. Eventually, I discovered
handmade paper, and that lead to sculpting my folk art figures.
I eventually
started painting again, which is something I never learned to do
in college--go figure!
Now I paint by intuition, letting the creative spirit guide me.
I very rarely do any preliminary drawings, but instead get a visualization
in my head of what I want the painting to be....either a still life,
a person or a scene. I feel that I'm better able to find my own
style this way, and I'm alwwhat happens!
I use the same
method to make the sculptures. They definitely take on a life of
their own, and I'm always surprised at the end result. My folk art
santas have been known to mysteriously turn into wizards, and a
nto a rabbit!
I consider myself
a contemporary self-taught folk artist who uses whatever it takes
to get the effect I want. I love bright colors and texture. The
sculpture is a way to explore three-dimensional art using the handmade
paper pulp. I tend to work in series, doing a lot of sculpture,
then a lot of painting and photography....one feeds off the other,
and it usof my brain!
My work has
been called both folk art and contemporary art. I'll leave it to
the buyer to
decide what they want to call it. All I know is that I hope it speaks
to someone and makes them happy to
We hope you
